The current conflict between Palestine and Israel

Interdisciplinary reflections

The current war situation between Palestine and Israel reflects a long-standing conflict, which escalated in October of last year. An incursion by the Hamas group into the southwestern part of the territory attracted world attention to a new episode of a dispute that began at the beginning of the 20th century, and that in this new escalation is already taking the lives of around 30 thousand people, the majority of They are Palestinian. This conflict, the product of geopolitical interests of great powers and internal disputes between populations and warring factions, has proven to have a religious component from its beginnings.

From the Christian faith, some fundamental questions arise. What is the role of biblical interpretation in understanding conflict? How to analyze and evaluate the use of the Bible to justify the possession of land? Can Scripture – and should – be a source to call for peace, harmony and justice? We also ask ourselves, what does Christian faith and doctrine have to say about the disputes, conflicts and different forms of violence that we observe daily in the media and that have marked the long history of this conflict? Can Christianity, in its theological and pastoral expressions, contribute from its faith to establish dialogues and sensitize us towards the construction of well-being for those who live this dispute daily? The topic questions the work of Theology in its different expressions, demanding reflection on the concerns raised and the search and exploration of creative possibilities to generate a culture of peace and full coexistence.

In this framework, Vida y Pensamiento journal considers it pertinent to dedicate an issue that addresses the conflict between Israel and Palestine from different disciplinary perspectives: historical, religious, biblical, theological, pastoral, among others. Aware of the potential contribution of the disciplines of Theology to the understanding and analysis of historical and cultural phenomena of our societies, we seek to contribute to the critical study of the conflict between the Israeli state and the Palestinian territories, paying special attention to the critical analysis of the role played religion and theology in this context. The goal is that, from our own disciplinary experiences and religious perspectives, we make significant contributions to promote hope, justice and peace in a world of war and violence.
