Abstract

This essay argües that the repeated exhortation to “eat, drink, and enjoy” in the book of Ecclesiastes is a species of ‘elite discourse.’ A traditional Judean scribe or scribes who authored Ecclesiastes placed this rhetoric in the mouth of his literary character Qohelet alongside other representations of Qohelet, especially the ‘royal fiction’ of 1:12 to 2: 26, in order to bolster a broader parodie and satiric critique of economic arrangements, and the elites who benefitted from such arrangements, in Ptolemaic Palestine.
