Church, colonialism and prophetic voice
Bartolomé de Las Casas in the shadow of death
Abstract
This essay discusses the initial configuration of the Christian church in the context of the native peoples of Latin America conquered by Spain during the sixteenth century. It concludes with the prophetic critique of Bartolomé de las Casas in his final days. Las Casas imagines a church that defends the oppressed and excluded native communities.
