Isarael and Palestine
A current and millennia-old conflict with biblical and spiritual roots
Abstract
The attacks by the Palestinian group Hamas on Israeli territory in October 2023 triggered a disproportionate reaction by the government headed by Benjamin Netanyahu, to the point that it is unanimously recognized that a true genocide has been unleashed, especially when it comes to bombings of the civilian population of the Gaza Strip. Hospitals, schools, churches and other meeting centers have been ferociously destroyed by the Israeli army and there is no agreement in sight to stop such cruelty. As is known, there is a religious, spiritual and biblical background behind this ancestral conflict, which is explored in this essay in the search to understand it, point out the problems of its evolution and suggest some clues for its eventual overcoming. Some alternative theological arguments are included that can help overcome the uncritical acceptance of the abuses of current militarism in the name of Israel's ancient election as “the people of God”, especially in Latin American evangelical churches and faith communities.
