El sufrimiento ¿tiene explicación?
Una palabra desde un continente experimentado en dolor
Abstract
The mystery of suffering ever haunts us. In seeking to explain and find meaning and relief, we continue to yearn to discover the meaning of suffering. Different theologies have developed their positions on the subject: on the one hand, a theology of suffering that understands sacrifice, pain and suffering as experiences of spiritual exaltation; on the other, a theodicy that seeks to defend God to the detriment of human dignity. From a continent deeply accustomed to pain, this article suggests that neither of these theological responses to the problem of suffering is viable. The praxis of Jesus Christ – one of inclusive, loving solidarity - is the path toward articulating a model for facing the urgent problem of pain. It is in the face of this urgency and running a parallel path between the two theological extremes cited above, that Latin American and Caribbean Liberation Theology presents the image of a liberating, transforming lifegiving God who hears the cry of those who suffer, does not choose sacrificial pain, nor the labyrinth of apologetics, but rather hope; in other words, a God makes an option for those who suffer.
