Tecnología y sociedad: Retos y oportunidades en la nueva Torre de Babel
Abstract
This article offers a reading of the virtual world in times of pandemic through the lens of the Tower of Babel narrative (Genesis 11:1-9). First, this text from Israel’s foundational myths invites the reader to explore the myths of the origins of the Internet and social media. Second, the African and Latin American interpretation of Genesis 11:1-9 functions as a mirror to explore the control exercised by surveillance capitalism. The tunnel vision created by social media, the Internet of Things (IoT), and wearable technology is a product of the behavior modification caused by these systems. Last, the writing evaluates language mixing up and dispersion as opportunities for decentralizing the power exercised by today’s technology.
