Abstract
Nos prometieron otra cosa. La modernidad, nos dijeron, nos traería todos los beneficios de la razón humana: la ciencia y la tecnología nos otorgarían el control sobre el medio ambiente, se acabaría toda carencia; la pasión ciega daría lugar al entendimiento; hasta nuestros demonios interiores quedarían apaciguados por las bondades del progreso. Cuando Brasil, por ejemplo, emprendió su aventura accidentada hacia la modernidad en el siglo 19, tomaron como lema “Orden y Progreso.”
