Gender and ideology perspective
Lecturas contextuales bíblicas en clave de género
Abstract
In the current Latin American context, conservative religious sectors have united with right-wing political groups and parties to delegitimize the recognition of social movements, especially those that defend the rights of women and sexually diverse communities. The instruments these groups generally use to manipulate public opinion on questions of human rights and gender relationships are a fundamentalist reading of the Bible, biological determinism, and the traditional Christian values promoted by the church. In the midst of this discouraging panorama for the Christian groups committed to social transformation, a contextual reading of the Bible brings hope and motivation to continue building spaces of freedom. From a gender perspective, the Bible has important potential to confront and overcome fundamentalist arguments that try to create fear and rejection of that which is different.
