Abstract

Biblical Studies suffer from an epistemological crisis. One major factor in such a crisis is the use of philosophical, hermeneutical, and cultural assumptions rooted in the hegemonic mode of interpretation: the historical-critical method.
Emancipatory models, at least in part, reproduce this historicist historiographical model, validating philosophical assumptions enacted by European and North American interpretative models. Despite embodying a political and ethical ethos attentive to the geopolitical realities of the Latin American continent, emancipatory readings reproduce colonialist philosophical and hermeneutical tenets. In this article, I introduce the work of Boaventura de Sousa-Santos as a springboard for a new type of biblical hermeneutic that dislodges its investment from the historicist method and commits to a full-blown presentist praxis.
