Abstract

Hugh Hefner should not be remembered only as the editor and creator of Playboy. Nor should Playboy be thought of only as a magazine of female nudes. In our culture, the effects of both are much deeper and more complex. This article tries to analyze the creation of a character such as Hefner and a magazine like Playboy, which have used ideas of sexual and social repression to establish themselves in opposition to vertical powers. In this context, Hefner has presented himself as someone opposed to many ideas of Christianity and to the sexual morality behind this religion; however, and largely thanks to this, he has been presented as a god that has come to offer not suffering but pleasure. That is, it will be demonstrated how Hefner’s attitude against repression was necessary to understand him as he is and also to understand his almost divine character.
