The Book of Proverbs and Theology of Prosperity

Abstract

Both the book of Proverbs and aspects of Prosperity Gospel thought wrestle with the ancient moral question of the role key goods like wealth and health play in conceptions of human flourishing. Nonetheless, the two moral visions differ substantially. Prosperity Gospel thinking conceives of goods like wealth and health as ‘rewards’ for right belief and hence overvalues them. For Proverbs, although such goods contribute to human well-being, it is only through the cultivation of wisdom that humans understand how to rightly pursue other goods and to comprehend in what ways and in what proportions they contribute to flourishing.
