Chosen people?
Beyond a selective biblical discourse
Abstract
The current conflict in Gaza has involved scholars from all over the world in analyzing the past and present of what seems to be an endless war. Biblical studies are not limited to a reading of the text in the past, but are concerned with the use of the Bible in contemporary contexts and how violence is currently being legitimized by resorting to a certain selection of biblical traditions, forgetting others. This essay puts into perspective, in a merely introductory manner, the notion of “Election” in various biblical traditions, trying to highlight the biased reading that ignores the breadth and polyphony of the Hebrew Bible.
