Abstract

Numbers 13-14, the first account of entering the “promised land” in the Old Testament, presents us with a brief account of the exploration of the land and a long discussion between the explorers, the people, God, and Moses about what decision to make based on what they have reported; it ends with a failed attempt at conquest. The text offers several points of view based on a combination of different theological traditions. The construction of this complex thought, based on different perspectives, allows the reader to read the story critically and rethink the meaning of this conquest account and the fulfillment of the promises.
