Afeite, adornos y sexualidad en las mujeres: una discusión desde la teología
Abstract
There is a saying is Spanish: “not so ugly as to be scary, but no so pretty as to charm”. This proverb contains two ideas concerning the beauty of women: they are not to be ugly because ugliness is feared, but too much beauty is dangerous because it is associated with magical arts, such as enchantment. This dualistic discourse on feminine beauty, women’s bodies, grooming and adornment, is part of a very subtle masculine control and patriarchal domination. Theological discourse has manifested a position very similar to those of society and institutions.
A review of this position will help us to understand the complicity that Christian theology has often had in sustaining subordinate gender relationships.
